Rick Godwin Says:

I embarked onboard the Simon Lake in April 1966 when she was tied up at Charleston Naval Base. We sailed for Holy Loch three months later. The day we sailed up the River Clyde, and turned into Holy Loch was absolutely beautiful. Sunshine and fair skies!

I was assigned to the Personnel Office where I spent my entire time aboard the Lake. I advanced from SA to PN2 in 3 years.

I still recognize many of the names here and on other rosters of those serving during my timeline. The Personnel Office team was outstanding - WO Marlin Goss, PNCM Bill Raney, PN1 John Downs, PN3 Mike Carrico, PN3 John Brueckl, PN1 Obremski, PN1 Joe Norris...Ed Bean, Hightower, PN2 Krausse etal !

While most of the Lake's personnel and families lived and/or socialized on the Dunoon side, I always lived in Gourock and Greenock. Some crazy apartments...and even crazier times! But it was so much easier to get to Glasgow, Edinburgh and the "outback" from that side of the Clyde.

We would ride the BoxL every day to and from the Lake from the Shore Patrol shack there in Gourock. In Gourock, I could walk from my apartment to the SP shack in about 5 minutes. When I lived in Greenock, I would drive my '68 Triumph Spitfire...it ran great in Scotland,  England and the Continent where I would go on leave. But it didn't fare too well when I returned to Arizona...and the summer heat!

Loved every day of duty in Holy Loch! Very challenging but four of the best years of my life. The Scottish people were very generous with their friendship for us...and the girls I'll never forget :)

Would love to hear from anyone who worked in Personnel or Admin offices - just email or call or write...
